Ghost Ancestors

UCLA Magazine commissioned this animation for an article highlighting the work of Sriram Sankararaman, UCLA professor of computational medicine, who is using statistics to look back 600,000 years into the human genome to investigate a hitherto-invisible branch of early humanity known as archaic hominus. AD Suzannah Mathur had a specific concept in mind that was sketched for and selected among a few different ideas.
